I
do feel that there is a slight difference between multimedia and multimodal.
The text describes multimodal as “the multiple ways we combine various
communicative modes in everyday life." But looking for a definition in the
text on multimedia I found none. So I did some quick research and found that
multimedia according to Oxford's online dictionary is "using more than one
medium of expression or communication." These explanations do seem very
similar but I do not think that is the case. For example, lolcats in the text
uses a variety of text and a picture of funny cats to display a comedic
message. Some people may agree that it is a multimedia message but I feel that
it could be both multimodal and multimedia. But, what I think to be true is
that multimodal falls under the category of multimedia. Does this make any
sense? To be more specific, the words and the picture all combined is created
with a multimodal idea. This multimodal idea, however, falls into the category
of being a multimedia image.
Another
example is the maps FDR and President Barrack Obama. These maps represent as a
whole a multimedia image. But taken apart and looked at closely one can point
out all the multimodal aspects of each figures, in particular, the texts, the
black, white and blue colors, the interactivity, and the statistics. These
visuals easily show the audience what they are looking at. Also, President
Obama’s map interactivity makes it easier for the audience to understand the
complexity of the map: what funds where distributed, who got them and how many
jobs were created.
So
once again they both contain multimodal texts, graphics and images. But each
falls into the category of being a multimedia object or image.
Page 3 response: The linguistic choice
that I notice for the question on page 3 is that word choice. The message is of
sadness and delivering a message that represent an understanding to a tragic
event. The most effective word choice is the word “assistance” because it goes
to show how the white house cares for the people of the Japanese earthquake.
Page 4 response: The visual differences
that I see from the two profiles are that @kristinarola uses the regular
template and the other profile @ s2cebll uses a modified version, using the
colors green and blue. This makes me feel like @kristinarola uses twitter just
for regular stuff and the other profile uses twitter for cool and neat things,
posts and links. I assume that @kristinarola is just your regular person and @
s2cebll is your rebel tech guy. Yes, I do have a Twitter profile but I rarely
use it so I just have the basic template. So @kristinarola’s profile makes me
also feel like she barely updates her Twitter.
page 5 response: The aural elements
that I hear are that of music and the tone of voice that the speaker is using.
This makes me want to listen more and instantly makes my brain want to be
creative. If the music was difference like that of country I would probably
stop listening to it because I dislike country. Therefore, this music can
relate to everyone because it’s kind of catchy.
Page 6 response: the eyes are drawn to
the 3 windows which have transitions to different links. There is also the WSU
logo on the top left. Since westerner's eyes are drawn to from left to right
the logo and the images on the right are simple to follow. The only thing that
I can point it which is out of place is the Zzusis link and the other two links
around it. They are really tiny and take a while to get used to that they are
there. I think it would be better if the whole site was in one page and didn't
have to scroll down to read what was on the very bottom.
Page 7 response: I watched the video in
this link:http://www.whitehouse.gov/photos-and-video/video/2012/08/20/president-obama-holds-news-conferenceand
it showed president Obama start the speech with a joke, which gave the press a
little laugh. Then a question was asked about Romney’s smear campaign against
him and President Obama looked appalled at what Romney has said. In particular,
the President said that those remarks were offensive to him. The President’s
hand gestures work effectively to drive home his points on what Romney is
doing. I noticed that he uses his hands a lot when he is talking. I think this
makes the speech very gestural.
