Is the homepage informative?
The critique-rs answer to this question was basically that the homepage should of been more about me and what the portfolio was about.
Was the projects page informative?
They said that on this page this leaned more info about me. Which is what I wanted them to get.
After reading the About me Section, do you understand of the portfolio is about.
They could understand my passion for soccer, and what I want to do.

What are the most interesting sections, Why?
One critiquer said that there favorite part about the about me section was when I said that soccer has encouraged me to strive forward toward my goals. Another said projects page, Sports and the live radio show I was in.
Name 2 things that the site should not include and 1 thing that it should definitely have.
Overall, they said that I should include my projects for DTC 355 and include more about me on the home page.
Was their difficulty using the site?
Most of them said that no it was very easy to navigate through the site.
Given the rhetorical situation, does this website make sense. If not what throws you off.
One critiquer said this," It's evident your love for soccer and Media. Perhaps add a personal statement at the top that is a brief statement of who you are and what you want to do. Then maybe  a link to your about me to find out more."
And the other critiquer said pretty much the same things.

Yes I do intend to follow all tips.  I already have a logo ready to go. My about me looks good, but it may need some more updating. I already have a contact to my email link and and all my blogs are linked too. Furthermore, my Twitter and my Facebook are clickable on my site. I just may need to put my Instagram on there as well. So I do plan to follow most of the tips that Smashing Magazine suggests. The main reason why I choose to follow these tips is because I already have them on my site and what they suggest can make my page more user friendly.

My favorite sites are Cartonblanc, Mikki Mottes, and F. Claire Scroggins because of the bright colors, the carton effects and the creativity that each site contain.  In order for me to make some of these sites I would need to know Flash, Div, Javascript and create many carton images.

My literacy narrative project will be on my Youtube subscriptions. I will analyze each one in sequence from when I first found them on Youtube to my latest subscription. Then I will give the audience a little preview of each subscription so they can become more familiar with the video content provider.

Outline:

My voice introducing the topic and what it’s about

Use about 5-10 different subscriptions and why I like each one. What types of strategies each one uses and what I learn from each one

Next, I will analyze what each subscription is about: comedy, political, sports, etc

Then I will discuss how these subscriptions have shaped my thinking and everyday life

Lastly, I will end it with a proposal so the audience can subscribe to some of these Youtube channels and why it will benefit them

What Nina Venables (the reviewer) said about my project 2 draft was very intriguing. My project still needs a lot of work and I think I can get it done with in 48 hours. I still need text but I got the layout pretty much finished

A quick summary of my project is that it focuses on Obama and Romney’s TV ads and some of their super PAC ads. The concept of my project incorporates pinning each candidate’s ads against each other, and analysis is provided to who is more effective while also including the terms that I learned in this class.

By the end, the audience will get a sense of what the ads meant and who made the most damage-hence the boxing concept of my layout. The last page of the project will show a “tell of the tape” that will contain bullet points about the candidate’s ads highlights, the facts, and the terms I learn in this class.

To get back to the peer reviewer, Nina said is that I should analysis each text with an unbiased approach. She also said that in my analysis of each advertisement of the different candidates, I shouldn’t discuss whom I’d vote for or whom the audience should find to be the better candidate. Ultimately, that makes a lot of sense because I can target many audiences. I, however, feel that if I want someone to vote for a candidate-in this case Obama- I want to make Obama seem like his ads prove more effective than Romney’s.

To address her concerns the best I can, I will analyze the text with an unbiased approach but in “The Tale of the Tape” page I will make a case for the best reason why someone should vote for Barrack Obama.

The first web text, Dove Campaign for Real Beauty by Sara is very appealing to any audience. Even though it is intended to girls, it, overall, demonstrates that society’s perception of beauty is distorted by ads and corporations. Her texts make a great case for this. I enjoyed this one very much. I like how she organized it in a way that’s simple. You just click on the picture and BAMM! you are there. I found each text contributed to the larger picture and they all connected flawlessly.

The web text Life-Based Web Comics by Ariel was very different from the Dove campaign. First off, it required a lot of reading and you could not click on the images to look at them yourself. I did like the overall set up. The fact that it was talking cartons was very creative. I understood the approach but did not get the overall context of the web text. I did, however, like the way she organized her text in a sliding window. That gives me the idea to use a similar approach.

I plan to organize me web text with a large picture of Obama in the middle spread out like Leonardo da Vinci’s Vitruvian Man. In each limp I plan on putting different clickable text. And then describe each one once you click on the text sort of like Dove Campaign for Real Beauty.

My Pitch For Obama

Hello everybody, as you may all know this November is your time to express yourself. This November is the time to decide. And this November is the time for you to become aware. Yes, these statements may seem broad. What does he mean? Is he speaking about the elections? Or What?

Exactly, now I got you thinking. Well, yes of course, this November is about the General elections. I’m sure you know about what this means. If you’re a Republican or Democrat or Independent, what options do we have? Let me be clearer, what Presidential nominees do we believe are the right ones. Now think for a moment. Let’s be honest, we do not have the greatest two available candidates right now.

Let me explain why. On one hand you have Mitt Romney. Yes Mr. Mitt “Gaffe” Romney. A quick Google search of Mitt Romney’s slip ups and you can find material for weeks. An overview of a few gaffes consist of the time when he call corporations people, or when he said, as a young boy he dreamed of being wealthy and famous and this would bring him happiness, then he ended the statement by saying, “and boy was I right.” And last but not least, how about when he singled out 47% of the population as being dependent and lazy. Either this is actually what Romney thinks or he just fumbles and fumbles time and time again. I will go along the lines to say yes this is what he thinks. He is very candid and doesn’t hold back, standing by his statements. However, there are the times when he flip-flops on his statements. Overall, he is not so great.

But then when we have the lesser of the two evils. The incumbent. The President of the United States. Mr. Barrack Obama. This man can give a speech and boy are they good. But does he deliver. It can be debated as to what he has delivered on, but his promises in the 2008 elections were so sky high that he himself said that the American people need not to expect so much and should lower their expectations. Furthermore, he promised to close down Gitmo, that didn’t happen. He promised to end the ridiculous war on drugs, which is costing tax payers and filling up the jails with non-violent criminals, but that hasn’t happen. In particular, his justice department has raided more dispensaries than the Bush administration. President Obama also passed the NDDA which allows for indefinite detention of United States’ citizens. This list goes on and on for this guy too

With the Romney-Ryan plan many Americans could get screwed and college students will suffer. For example, the Romney-Ryan plan plans to cut many social programs and cut grants to students. Also the biggest thing students should worry about is that Romney plans to send student loans back to the bank, this could turn into higher interests and more fees. Furthermore, cuts in education are also called for in the Romney-Ryan Budget.

However, let it be known that with Barrack Obama, the middle class has a likely chance to grow and the poor would benefit with Obama. Obama plans to cut taxes for the middle class, keep Pell grants and have the federal government make out the loans. Moreover, with Obama there have been a number of jobs being created after the nasty recession of 2008. Many critics would say it is not enough. I say that he got handed a house with a broken kitchen, no clean water and grime all over the place, let the guy have four more years to at least do some more cleaning.

Blog #3.

Emphasis

1.     Describe where your attention is visually drawn in this text. What strategies does the author use to emphasize this element? Given that this text is essentially a title page for a larger project, does this emphasis seem effective to you? Why or why not?

My attention is on the notepad and the drawings in the notepad.  It looks like she uses large, dark and aggressive letters to convey meaning to DRM. Then she changes the meaning from Digital Rights Management, then to Digital Robbing Maniacs. And on the next note pad she draws some sort of poster board with legs that say CRIMINAL. Now I am confused but interested and plugged in. Since this is title for a larger project, the author does a fascinating job at drawing my attention. So the beginning emphasis for this video is very effective.

2.     Between composing the two different pages ("Digital Rights Management/Digital Robbing Maniacs" and "Criminal") the woman disappears from the screen and the jumpy stop-motion effect ceases. Describe how this moment of stillness can be understood as "emphasis" and explain if it seems like an effective strategy? What is emphasized by stopping the movement?

The moment of stillness towards the end suggests to the reader to look closely at the note that says CRIMINAL, and asks for their assumptions on what this word may mean in this context. At first I didn’t notice it, but looking again at the word CRIMINAL there are multiple arrows pointing at it and this emphasizes look, look at this, what do you think this means. Basically, it draws questions in the readers mind about this specific phrase.  It’s an effective strategy because it tells the reader to pause and look closely and think at these important words.

3.     Consider the role sound plays in emphasis. How does the soundtrack to this clip help to (a) emphasize certain moments in the clip, and (b) place a particular emotional emphasis on the meaning of the clip?

The sound in the clip creates an undercover, movement in the dark, and criminal element, like a good theme song for a spy movie. It makes me feel like this project will be about a robber or a thief.

Contrast

1.     Watch 0:22-0:36 of The JUMP's "Call for Papers." Notice the words, the gray box, the cartoon background, and the sound. Do you think any of these elements contrast? If so, which ones and how so (specifically, what makes them different from one another)? What effects do you think this use of contrast has on the audience and the purpose? Consider how the text's effectiveness might change if these elements did not contrast.

There is a very large contrast between the sounds because there is a digital sound of a woman’s voice then there is one of a male’s voice. Furthermore, the digital voice in general, contrasts with the 1960’s cartoon because the digital voice will take place in the future and the cartoon is in the past.  At first, this cartoon was a little difficult to understand because it was hard to listen to the male’s voice, then look at the little carton and then read the words running along the screen at the bottom. Everything is contrasting which makes it hard to process the meaning of the video.  If the text did not contrast so much I would easily understand what The Jump was all about and would not have to watch the video so many times.

2.     Watch 0:55-1:08 of The JUMP's "Call for Papers." Notice how this is similar to the clip from question 1, yet the background no longer includes the cartoon. First, describe what elements are contrasting. Next, explain why you think the cartoon background was deleted from this section. What happens to the contrast now that the background is black? Which element is now the most emphasized, and how do you think this helps convey the purpose of the text?

The elements that are contrasting are the white font on the letters and the black background.  I think the cartoon was deleted to show emphasis on the text which is vital in connecting both parts of the cartoon together. The contrast is greater emphasized by the white font and the black background.

3.     Imagine you've been asked to design a flyer to post around your campus advertising The JUMP. What would the flyer look like? Which element(s) would contrast and to what effect?

The Jump will be greatly emphasized by large white letters on a black background. Then the 1960’s cartoon will appear across the flyer in different spots. And a link to the video will be provided in small font.

Organization

1.     Choose 5 of the 15 images to drag into the empty timeline. Make a note about each of the 5 photos to explain what each one signifies, and how one leads to another. How does your organization convey your purpose?

The main reason I picked them was because they all are black and white photos.  The purpose was also to establish modern 20th century images and blend them together.

2.     Are there different arguments that you could have made by organizing your 5 photos in different ways?

If I would to put the picture with the word “modern” at the end it could mean, a rise to modernity starting from the image of the outdated elevators.

3.     Are there other elements you could add to make your argument stronger—for example, playing music with the slide show or adding text?

The elements that would make it the argument stronger would be if I were to add images of the great depression, the first ford model-t or other 20th century inventions and stories.

Alignment

1.     How would you describe alignment of the words "murmuring" and "insects" in the opening scene? How does the unusual alignment (reflected on screen and timed) add to your interpretation of the text?

I would describe the alignment of the two words as appearing from nowhere and then aligning themselves on the bottom of the screen.  This makes me think about what these words may mean. Questions come up like do the insects murmur or do the insects have completely no correlation with murmuring at all.

2.      Now watch the "Earth" scene. What other elements are aligned in this scene? How does the consistent alignment of elements across screens (and also across some of the scenes) affect how you read these scenes? What elements do you end up focusing on? Would the scene seem as effective if all of the elements on the page (upside-down moon, contrails, words, background color, etc.) had no shared alignment?

We have “in the weeds, murmuring, and insects,” and the words align themselves on the bottom right side of the screen. It takes patience to read all the elements because you could easily miss one and not understand that the earth scene you requires one to read the whole text. The elements that I end up focusing on are the words “murmuring and insects” because they repeat themselves from the opening scene.  I’m not sure if it would be as effective because the only picture I get with all these words is nature and nature has no alignment, it is all over the place. I get the sense that these words will all come together in the end.

3.     Now watch the "Air" scene, paying attention to the lines of poetry and the audio tracks. The poem doesn't settle on the same horizontal axis as the other scenes do, and the two phrases in the audio track are aligned (synced) to appear with each line of poetry. Why do you think the alignments of the words are different between the Earth and Air scenes? What is the significance of the audio track's content in relation to that difference?

I think the difference of the alignments is due because we are looking at a whole different aspect of nature so why align it the same as the Earth scene. Also it looks like the words are being secreting from the geese like there dropping little presents from the sky. Furthermore, the difference of the audio in the Earth and Air scene is that the Air scene seems more peaceful, calming and nurturing and the audio in the Earth scene seem more conflicting, and catastrophist, especially with the sounds of the police sirens.

4.     Now watch the "Water" scene. How does the curvature of the words, aligning with the background image of an eye, relate to what the man in the audio track is saying?

The curvature of the words, aligning with the background image of an eye, relate to the sadness and low tone in the man’s voice

5.     Based on the alignment (or lack of alignment) between elements in a scene and across scenes, why are the three menu options ("Air," "Earth," and "Water") on the main screen of this text not aligned? What does this lack of alignment tell you about the emphasis, sequence, and purpose of this text?

I don’t think they’re aligned because nature is not aligned it’s all over the place. Moreover, the separation of the elements makes them unique to themselves as different stages of the atmosphere, in particular, air is the sky, earth is the soil and water is beneath the soil.

Proximity

1.     Did you group certain categories of information together? How did you group them—typographically, by placing them closer together, or in some other way?

I group the title and the subtitle together at the top. Right under it I had the seagull soaring through the sky. At the bottom of the cover I put the author’s name

2.     What do you think is the most important piece of information on your cover? What choices did you make about typeface or size to convey that sense of importance? How does the layout of your book cover reflect your sense of how the information should be organized?

The most important piece, I think, is the seagull because the visuals one would get is about flight and soaring through the sky, which is what this book is about, flight. Well I made sure that the biggest font was the title and the subtitle the smallest because the subtitles are usually smaller in other covers. The author also has large font but since it’s located at the bottom it’s in its own group and makes it rather important to look at. I did it this way because I saw how other book covers are and followed the same path.

3.     What are some limitations you've encountered in laying out visual elements in a traditional way? What are some other ways you might want to organize the information on a book cover that might work better in a non-traditional format?

The only limitation was that I had a large space to work with but not enough elements or larger fonts. I would have added some color too. To further answer the question, I’m limited because of my lack of knowledge of what attracts people to grab a book just because of the cover. If this were an online book I would add some clickable links and a table of contents link.

Blog #2, Why Figure 2.2 is A Good Model to Follow.

I do agree with the phrase “things people go the site looking for,” because it should be common knowledge that one goes to university website to look for department/course lists, usable campus maps and application forms, etc. Furthermore, the front page should have all the essentials; campus photos, press releases, promotions for campus events, and links to campus security because it may be tedious to find these things if there are multiple pages to navigate through.

The campus website that I chose was the University of Southern California (USC). Let me tell you it is definitely a nice site to view. There are multiple modes used to describe the site. The visuals of this website make for the eyes to easily wonder around the front page and purpose of this site is easily noted. The large photo in the middle with the group of smiley faces creates a sense of happiness and good environment that is provided at USC. The whole site is of the colors of the school: cardinal and gold, and the author is USC web services. Again, it’s a nice site but not as good as WSU.

Looking at USC’s site it is almost as if they followed the structure of the comic strip of figure 2.2. First, they have the full name of the school. Then there is a link to campus photos, press releases and promotions for campus events. Moreover, one can easily find a link to campus safety, and a link to department course lists under academics.

I believe that figure 2.2 is correct in many ways. It’s obvious that all websites must have the schools full name. I believe this because it is to show the school's prestige. Second, for a website to be a university website it must have all of the things that figure 2.2 indicate for it to work and function as a decent website of any university. Lastly, a few of these things do not necessarily have to be on the site, but if many are missing, like the full name or department course lists, the intended audience may have a difficult time accessing the content that they are looking for.

DTCP355 Blog 1 and To Do responses

I do feel that there is a slight difference between multimedia and multimodal. The text describes multimodal as “the multiple ways we combine various communicative modes in everyday life." But looking for a definition in the text on multimedia I found none. So I did some quick research and found that multimedia according to Oxford's online dictionary is "using more than one medium of expression or communication." These explanations do seem very similar but I do not think that is the case. For example, lolcats in the text uses a variety of text and a picture of funny cats to display a comedic message. Some people may agree that it is a multimedia message but I feel that it could be both multimodal and multimedia. But, what I think to be true is that multimodal falls under the category of multimedia. Does this make any sense? To be more specific, the words and the picture all combined is created with a multimodal idea. This multimodal idea, however, falls into the category of being a multimedia image.

Another example is the maps FDR and President Barrack Obama. These maps represent as a whole a multimedia image. But taken apart and looked at closely one can point out all the multimodal aspects of each figures, in particular, the texts, the black, white and blue colors, the interactivity, and the statistics. These visuals easily show the audience what they are looking at. Also, President Obama’s map interactivity makes it easier for the audience to understand the complexity of the map: what funds where distributed, who got them and how many jobs were created.

So once again they both contain multimodal texts, graphics and images. But each falls into the category of being a multimedia object or image.

Page 3 response: The linguistic choice that I notice for the question on page 3 is that word choice. The message is of sadness and delivering a message that represent an understanding to a tragic event. The most effective word choice is the word “assistance” because it goes to show how the white house cares for the people of the Japanese earthquake.

Page 4 response: The visual differences that I see from the two profiles are that @kristinarola uses the regular template and the other profile @ s2cebll uses a modified version, using the colors green and blue. This makes me feel like @kristinarola uses twitter just for regular stuff and the other profile uses twitter for cool and neat things, posts and links. I assume that @kristinarola is just your regular person and @ s2cebll is your rebel tech guy. Yes, I do have a Twitter profile but I rarely use it so I just have the basic template. So @kristinarola’s profile makes me also feel like she barely updates her Twitter.

page 5 response: The aural elements that I hear are that of music and the tone of voice that the speaker is using. This makes me want to listen more and instantly makes my brain want to be creative. If the music was difference like that of country I would probably stop listening to it because I dislike country. Therefore, this music can relate to everyone because it’s kind of catchy.

Page 6 response: the eyes are drawn to the 3 windows which have transitions to different links. There is also the WSU logo on the top left. Since westerner's eyes are drawn to from left to right the logo and the images on the right are simple to follow. The only thing that I can point it which is out of place is the Zzusis link and the other two links around it. They are really tiny and take a while to get used to that they are there. I think it would be better if the whole site was in one page and didn't have to scroll down to read what was on the very bottom.

Page 7 response: I watched the video in this link:http://www.whitehouse.gov/photos-and-video/video/2012/08/20/president-obama-holds-news-conferenceand it showed president Obama start the speech with a joke, which gave the press a little laugh. Then a question was asked about Romney’s smear campaign against him and President Obama looked appalled at what Romney has said. In particular, the President said that those remarks were offensive to him. The President’s hand gestures work effectively to drive home his points on what Romney is doing. I noticed that he uses his hands a lot when he is talking. I think this makes the speech very gestural.
